Fresh Flowers

Fresh flowers are among the best living and breathing gifts of this fragile world. They help to bring a little bit of nature into your hand, into your home and your workplace. The flowers are selected with care before becoming part of your arrangement. With continued care, you should retain the freshness and life of nature for days.

Certain flowers and foliage require some extra care in handling, care information will be provided when required. In all cases, washing of hands after handling is a wise precaution.

Variations in Fresh Flowers

Colour variations in fresh flowers occur as part of the natural biological process.

Seasonal variations in availability of fresh flowers occur with a number of varieties, although the world wide distribution of growers helps to mitigate the effects on supplies.

However, whether it is a colour or a variety that you are looking for we will endeavour to fulfil your requirements.

Fresh Flower Care

Preparation

Prepare your flowers by removing any leaves that will sit below the water level and cut all stems diagonally with a pair of sharp scissors. This helps the flowers to absorb the water, reduces the effects of bacteria. It also stops air bubbles forming under the stems which prevent flowers absorbing water. The vase must be clean, large enough for the quantity of flowers and between one third and one half the height of the flowers to provide adequate support without squashing them. If your vase is too tall for your flowers try raising the stems by placing a layer of pebbles or glass marbles in the vase.

Food and Water

Add the sachet of cut flower food to slightly warm water in the vase to extend the life of your flowers. Remember to top up the water each day, and change it every day or two. The regular change of water will also help to reduce the effects of bacteria. A mist spray over the flowers is helpful. More cut flower food can be bought at almost any flower outlet.

Display

Your vase of flowers should be positioned in a cool place and out of drafts. Avoid direct sunlight and sources of heat. Roses in particular prefer to be kept cool. Of course, you must not place your vase on top of or next to electrical equipment such as the television. You should always put a mat under your vase too, this will stop your vase scratching or marking the surface of your furniture. It will also help to stop any water marks from condensation or spillages from watering.
